Beautiful tiles may catch your eye first, but the best part of mahjong is what happens around the table: conversation, a little friendly competition, and a reason to get together again.
If you’re new to American mahjong, the shopping list can feel a little overwhelming. Do you need your own tiles? Is a mat essential? And what exactly is that card everyone keeps beside their rack?
Here’s our guide to getting started, with a few suggestions for making your table feel as inviting as the game itself.
Your American mahjong starter checklist
For a typical four-player game, your group needs:
- One complete American mahjong tile set
- Four racks
- Two dice
- A current National Mah Jongg League card for each player, if your group plays by NMJL rules
- A table with enough room for the tiles and four comfortable seats
Pushers, a mat, storage, and other accessories can make the experience easier and more personal, but you can add them as you go. If you’re attending a lesson or playing at a friend’s house, ask what is provided before buying anything. You may only need to bring your own card!
1. An American mahjong tile set
Make sure you choose a set intended for American mahjong. A standard American game uses 152 tiles, including jokers. Some sets include additional spare tiles, so the number in the box may be higher than the number you use in play.
When choosing your first set, look beyond the color palette. Can you comfortably read the numbers and recognize the symbols? Do you like the size of the tiles? Check the product description for exactly what is included, because racks, dice, and storage are typically sold separately.
Then comes the fun part: choosing a style you love. From soft blues and greens to bold patterns and rich tortoise tones, your tiles can be the starting point for your whole table.

2. The playing card your group uses
When playing by National Mah Jongg League rules, each player uses the current year’s official card. It lists the winning hands and their values, giving you a reference as you build your hand.
The card is separate from your tile set. Before a lesson or your first game, confirm which card your instructor or group uses so everyone is following the same reference. A quick-start guide can help you learn, but it does not replace the playing card.

3. Racks and optional pushers
Racks hold your tiles upright so you can see and organize your hand. Plan on one rack for each player.
Pushers help move the walls of tiles into position. They’re a useful addition, and some rack sets include them, they are usually hinged or magnetic. Check the listing before purchasing so you know whether you’re buying racks alone or a rack-and-pusher set.
For a coordinated look, pull a color from your tiles or mat. The pieces don’t have to match exactly to look beautiful together.

4. Dice
Two dice are used when setting up the game to determine where to break the wall. Most tile sets come with dice, but you can update those to add another pop of style and uniqueness to your table.
A dice dish is optional, but it gives the dice a place to land and adds a charming detail to your table. It’s also an easy way to bring in another color or texture without changing your whole setup.

5. A comfortable playing surface
A mahjong mat is helpful, though you don’t need a specialty mat to begin learning. It can soften the sound of tiles and provide a comfortable playing surface. Choose one that fits your table and leaves enough room for the racks and tile walls.
We love using the mat to bring a tablescape together. You might choose a quiet pattern that lets your tiles stand out or a colorful design that inspires the rest of your accessories.

What can you add later?
Once you know where and how often you’ll play, it’s easier to choose the extras that suit your routine.
- Tile storage: A bag or box keeps your set together between games. Check its dimensions and tile capacity, especially if you plan to include racks or other accessories. Explore mahjong storage.
- Shufflers: A handy accessory for mixing face-down tiles between games.
- A table lamp: Helpful lighting can make the tile faces and card easier to see. Position it so it leaves plenty of playing room.
- A coordinated tablescape: If you love choosing everything together, browse our mahjong tablescape bundles. Review each bundle’s contents to see what else you may need, including playing cards.
A few questions beginners often ask
Does everyone need their own tile set?
No. The group shares one set during a game. Each player needs access to a rack and the card the group uses, but you don’t all need to bring tiles.
Do I need to buy a special mahjong table?
No. You can begin with a suitable table you already own. Look for a stable surface with enough room for the game and comfortable seating for four.
Should I buy everything before taking a lesson?
Ask your instructor first. Learning with the equipment provided can help you discover what you prefer before choosing your own set.
Can I use any mahjong tile set for American mahjong?
Check that it contains the tiles needed for American play, including jokers. Sets made for other versions of mahjong may have a different tile assortment.
